TEEPEE MAGIC, in association with VBC 88.3FM and UNDER THE RADAR presents: “PUMP UP THE VOLUME”Part Two of a Two Night Showcase of the Australian Avant Garde.Wednesday 15 February at San Fransisco Bathhouse, 8pm - - - FREE !This show starts early for a reason- it has to fit in six brilliant bands, some of whom have never toured to New Zealand before. This is going to be a very loud and exciting evening, where we are sonically transported to a dry, red land of sonic experimentation. Seriously.ALPS is a true legend of experimental music. Hailing from Newcastle, he has toured the world almost non-stop for the last five years, releasing four full length albums and a slew of 7” singles and tapes. Teepee Magic are proud to currently present a cassette of his Cycles LP, first released in 2011. ALPS’ music has grown and changed over hundreds of live performances and his shows are now a rich, varied scape of isolated synthetic drones and squalling impassioned guitar. Minimal synthesis and punk rock rarely sit comfortably beside each other but that uneasy juxtaposition is one that ALPS truly owns. http://alps.bandcamp.com/ Further South, almost near enough to reach out and touch New Zealand, we find Hobart’s TIGER CHOIR. Last year at Camp A Low Hum, they were the first band to get anyone to dance to them; given the dull heat of the February afternoon in question, that constitutes a major achievement. It’s also an unsurprising one, given the band’s rhythmic inventiveness, sharp pop sensibilities and infectious sense of fun. Their recent EP is described by the band as being not quite as loud or as danceable as they are live. Be prepared- they will be louder and more danceable than you have any right to expect. http://tigerchoir.bandcamp.com/SECRETIVE GEORGE have never yet performed in New Zealand. They recently posted a youtube video requesting places to sleep during their tour. Here’s a tip: you should hit them up and organise some quality time with these awesome people because they are sweet dudes beyond all expectation. SECRETIVE GEORGE have exactly one song on their Facebook page at the moment and it is called Wooden Ships. Wooden Ships is such a good song that I currently have a bookmark in Safari dedicated to me listening to it as often as possible. Their music is complex and grainy, yet still vibrant. They wear glitter, they dance, they are really rocking and awesome and cool. Seriously. I mean it about the glitter http://www.facebook.com/secretivegeorge?sk=app_178091127385GRASS CANNONS’ current membership carries the life essence of so many notable Auckland bands that the collective now has something of a Voltron-like quality. Except that the powers in question are combined, not to protect the universe from the Evil Empire of Planet Doom, but to play catchy fuzzed out noise rock. This is probably a better thing in the context of this show. Although my opinion may change if San Fran is attacked by Metalbeast Supermonsters. Grass Cannons have recently released a lovely new EP called Vet Dreams.http://grasscannons.bandcamp.com/FOXTROT is the performance project of Flo Wilson. Her music generates architectures and spaces of sound which both transport and extend the mind. The rich intricacy of her music is all the more startling when one considers the simplicity of the means with which she creates it. Singing into a single microphone, Flo loops layers of disparate vocal sounds to channel the classical and avant garde in equal measure. Foxtrot’s performances are enriching and challenging and super rad- see for yourself here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ycrhdPddLQ8CARB ON CARB come from Wellington. Like me. They used to have other members and be called Mammal Airlines. I associate a lot of things with James and Nicole’s music, liveliness, clarity, focused simplicity and distortion are among them. Be impressed with their directness and energy as performers. Listen to the ringing in your ears. It will stay with you for months. This show makes me kind of super excited. To be honest, I really wish I wasn’t running it so I could just go batshit crazy and thrash to a million cool bands. It is FREE. There are awesome DRINK SPECIALS and special MEGA SECRET DJs, Come to it and wind down from being all fucked up and grouchy about Camp finishing the weekend before.IT WILL BE AWESOME!

This is going to be a very loud and exciting evening, where people jitterbug uncontrollably to the exploratory sounds of the new Australia.BARE GRILLZ come from Newcastle. They say they’re reminiscent of So You Think You Can Dance; “shrill screaming mixed with hip hop dancing”. I think they sound like fast and complex guitar music. Vivid, powerful and still intelligent. Like rock, with some of the integrity it’s forgotten over the years. Speaking of integrity, they played a number of shows last year as the backing band for ALPS. High implied praise! http://bare-grillz.bandcamp.com/NO ART come from Sydney and are regularly compared to Sonic Youth, Liars and The Church. Their specially constructed long form work, Snaky Looking, was even featured on ABC Radio National’s Quiet Spaces, a grand accomplishment for a band so invested in boundary pushing and tonal deconstruction. I don’t think they sound like hip-hop dancing at all. They sound more like an evening dying under the slow weight of stars. Seriously. http://listn.to/noart/playerASSASSINS 88 come from Canberra. They remind me of how fun it can be to play really, really, seriously fast and loud. Coming from an ambient musician, that’s quite a compliment. Their music fills out the spectrum with overdriven guitars and harsh, crisp cymbals; there is no space for abstract contemplation. Movement is usually mandatory. Every so often, though, they’ll drop some harmonies out of the sky, slow it down a little and keep you guessing. They keep me interested. http://assassins.bandcamp.com/HEADSPINS come from Auckland. They are dark and propulsive and exorcise the energies of their youth through granular and varied postpunk. Headspins lack the drowsiness of many who imitate that timeless sound, replacing it, instead, with a raw sleeplessness that charges their music with feeling. http://headspins.bandcamp.com/CARB ON CARB come from Wellington. T Shirt Design for Black Wire Records, in Sydney, 2011.

Snowfield and Ocelot have both played at Black Wire to Common Ground, on tour and it’s the best All-Ages venue/record store combo in Australia, in my opinion. Awesome community and great selection (I got an amazing Negative Approach shirt, last time I played). Check them out: http://blackwiretocommonground.blogspot.com/
